This application note, Fraction Collector for Microfluidic Cell Culture, demonstrates how automated, precise sample collection from microfluidic cell cultures can transform prenatal drug testing, supporting the development of safer medications for pregnant women and their babies.

The application note from MIC and i3S showcases a microfluidic cell perfusion setup with an inline fraction collector, capable of collecting up to 20 samples at volumes (10-1500 µl) and intervals defined by the user, shown here as 150 µl samples hourly over 20 hours with high accuracy (152.6 ± 1.3 µl, <2% variation). This system allows researchers to analyze sequential fractions for molecular changes, such as metabolism, transport and uptake/release, which are critical for understanding a drug’s impact on placental or fetal cells. By automating sample collection, the fraction collector eliminates manual errors and enables high-throughput, time-resolved studies—perfectly aligning with LIFESAVER’s goal of generating robust data for prenatal drug safety.
For example, this technology can enable tracking of how antidepressants are metabolized by placental cells over time, revealing potential risks to fetal development or maternal physiology.
